Split This Rock is proud to present new virtual and in-person events for you to gather with other like-minded poetry lovers and writers while expanding the horizons of your creative potential. Art and community are here to support us through challenging times. It’s Split This Rock’s mission to create accessible, meaningful, and diverse spaces that bring poetry to the people.

Registration 

Most events are ticketed. While we’d love to offer these spaces for free, the funding landscape for the arts is increasingly challenging: we continue to see fewer grant awards and less investment in the arts across the board.

Every registration supports our work and helps keep Split This Rock alive in lean times. If you have the means, now is the time to invest in Split This Rock’s mission to preserve spaces for poetry toward social change.

About Split This Rock Writing Workshops

Read, write, and reflect on poetry in a supportive virtual or in-person community. Split This Rock poetry workshops are open to all experience levels, whether you've already published your first book or you've never written a poem before. Our brilliant poet-facilitators will guide you through writing exercises to stoke your imagination, explore new ideas, clarify your voice, and hone your craft.

Workshop tickets are sliding scale: $30 / $60 / $100. Workshops run from 6:30-8 pm ET. Visit each workshop registration page for a description of the workshop and information about the poet-facilitator.

We offer both in-person and virtual writing workshops. Virtual workshops will take place on Zoom. In-person workshops will take place at American Poetry Museum in Washington, D.C. 

These workshops have been made possible by the generosity of poets who have offered to donate their time and talents. With their help and yours, Split This Rock can navigate this challenging and unprecedented moment while continuing our work of supporting poets who are often underrepresented, excluded, and erased from the literary landscape. 

VIRTUAL WORKSHOP ACCESSIBILITY: Zoom auto-captions will be provided. Written versions of poem prompts & poems used for discussion will be provided via screen share, the chat, or links. Accommodation requests accepted by registration form or email.

D.C. WORKSHOP ACCESSIBILITY: Venue is wheelchair accessible. Hard copies of poem prompts & poems used for discussion will be provided. Accommodation requests accepted by registration form or email.

October 20: Untrue Blue: An Introduction to Ekphrastic Writing with Tala Khanmalek

October 29: Stubborn Roots: Poems to Grow a Better World Book Launch

Celebrate Stubborn Roots, a new poetry collection from Shout Mouse Press and Split This Rock! Youth poets and Mahogany L. Browne will read. The event is FREE to attend at Planet Word in Washington, D.C.

On October 29, 6-8 pm, join us at Planet Word in Washington, D.C. in celebration of the highly anticipated book launch of Stubborn Roots: Poems to Grow a Better World. This bold new collection of poetry from Shout Mouse Press illuminates today’s activist experience through the poetry and essays of our most vital and essential youth. Stubborn Roots was created in partnership with Split This Rock.

Acclaimed writer, playwright, organizer and educator Mahogany L. Browne will be our guest poet. Browne will welcome this book into the world with a dynamic group of youth authors who will perform readings of their work from the book. Music provided by DJ Franky J.

Tickets for the event are FREE with RSVP. Each RSVP includes the option to pre-order the book as an add-on, so be sure to reserve a spot (and your book)!

November 5: The Crooked Witness: Writing Lyric Instability in an Age of Polycrisis with A.D. Lauren-Abunassar
